a b s t r a c t
CloudcomputingislikenedandequatedtotheIndustrialRevolution.Itstransforma-
tionalnatureis,however,associatedwithsignificantsecurityandprivacyrisks.
This paperinvestigateshowthecontextsprovidedbyformalandinformalinstitutions
affecttheperceptionsofprivacyandsecurityissuesinthecloud.Thispaperhighlights
thenature,origin,andimplicationsofinstitutionsandinstitutionalchangesinthe
contextofcloudcomputing.Agoalofthepresentworkisalsotogaininsightsintothe
mechanismsandforcesthathavebroughtaboutinstitutionalchangesinthecloud
industry.Specifically,theyinvestigatehowcontradictionsgeneratedatvariouslevelsby
thetechnology,theformationofdensenetworksandrelationshipsandthechanging
powerdynamicshavetriggeredinstitutionalchanges.Sincethecurrentanalysisofthe
causesandconsequencesofinstitutionsandinstitutionalchangeismainlyconcerned
with moreestablishedindustriesandmarkets,thispaperisexpectedtoprovideinsights
into institutionssurroundingtothisnewandemergingtechnologicaldevelopment.
